The Academy Awards are a total mystery to me. Who picks the Oscar winners these days and on what basis is an even bigger mystery.
I seriously can’t figure it out. I know I am no cinema “expert” but I will go so far to say that the majority of voters responsible for selecting the winners deliberately pick one of the worst movies of the year. Maybe I’m missing something important, but I know what I like and what I don’t like. Take last year, for example…Slumdog Millionaire. Seriously? What the eff? That would definitely not have been my first choice. In fact, I didn’t even make it to the halfway mark in Slumdog Millionaire. Watching that kid run through garbage and enormous piles of fecal matter and gettting tortured a couple times was quite enough for me, thank you very much.
The Hurt Locker? Watched it last night. Not as horrid as Slumdog Millionaire, but it was freakin BORING. I just don’t understand what made it better than the other 9 (10 nominees, Academy? Really? Not such an elite category anymore, now is it?) movies in the Best Picture category. I didn’t see all of the nominated movies but, aside from District 9 and Up In The Air, I think the ones I did see were better than The Hurt Locker. It probably doesn’t help that I am sick of anything involving the war, Iraq, Afghanistan and the like. Quite frankly, I think it would do the Americans (and everyone else that doesn’t belong there) a lot of good to just COME HOME. If everyone in the Middle East wants to blow themselves up, who are you guys to stop them? Hmmm? I think I’m off topic…
